Three MetaMask Snaps to Safeguard Your Web3 Wallet during the Surge

Leverage community-powered security with these MetaMask Snaps, safeguarding your crypto wallet throughout the Linea Surge.

The Linea Surge is in full force. Launched on May 16th, this Voyage is enhancing Linea's zkEVM Layer 2 ecosystem by increasing liquidity and total value locked (TVL) on the network. The star of the program is LXP-L, a soulbound, non-transferable token minted to every address that provides liquidity to Linea during the Surge.

Last week, we explored Linea’s focus on security measures to ensure that participating dapps keep users safe during the Surge. This includes requiring dapps to prove threat prevention through audits and to implement a real-time monitoring solution from one of Linea's security partners.

We want to extend our security initiatives further by encouraging the community to be active in self protection and to collectively build an additional security layer. So this week, we’re diving into how Voyagers (you!) can enhance protection with MetaMask Snaps, including HAPI, Tenderly, and Quick Intel.

What Are MetaMask Snaps?

MetaMask Snaps allow users to add features and functionality to their MetaMask wallet. Security Snaps are a type of MetaMask Snap that adds an extra layer of safety to transactions.

These Snaps can decode dangerous transactions in real-time, provide proactive security alerts, collate information from security leaders, scan addresses in your pre-signed transaction against known scammer databases, and more.

The more security the better. You can enhance your wallet’s security by installing and utilizing multiple Snaps together, creating a robust shield.

Which Snaps Should I Use for the Surge?

For the Surge, we recommend the below three Snaps to protect your wallet and you can browse additional Security Snaps here.

  • HAPI: A cybersecurity protocol offering data analytics, risk-scoring addresses, reputation scoring, and automated contract vulnerability detection. Notable features include HAPI ID, which offers a digital identification of a user’s on-chain activity to simplify blockchain action interpretation for users, protocols, dApps, and businesses. Additionally, HAPI Security provides an open on-chain database of malicious addresses to help DeFi secure itself from money laundering.

  • Tenderly: A simulation RPC allowing dapp builders to preview transaction outcomes before they hit the chain. Tenderly Alerting monitors contract and account events, sending real-time notifications for unusual activity in smart contracts or wallets. Additionally, Virtual TestNets allows dapp developers to develop their code on private testnet-like infrastructure and avoid sharing the code on public networks before it's ready.

  • Quick Intel: Supports over 40 blockchains and scans contracts in seconds, where hidden language and complex code can leave even savvy crypto traders vulnerable to scams. The Security Snap’s contract scanner allows you to search a contract address on quickintel.io before you transact to get a thorough, real-time token analysis, and make a more informed trade.

How Can I Install Security Snaps?

  1. Download, or update, MetaMask Extension (v11.0 and up)

  2. Choose which Snaps (or all!) you want to install from the MetaMask Snaps directory.:

    1. HAPI

    2. Tenderly

    3. Quick Intel

  3. Click “Add to MetaMask” on your desired Snap.

  4. You can now see your installed Snap(s) in a new tab whenever you make a transaction.

Stay tuned for more on Linea’s security measures during the Surge coming out later this week.
